WESTMAN ISLANDS

It takes only 30 minutes by ferry to get to the Westman Islands. And the sailing in itself is very pleasant and affords great views. The principal island of the archipelago, Heimaey has so many gems for you to see and explore. Just the entrance to the harbor from the sea is spectacular – the high cliffs and the bird life are amazing. All those adorable puffins nesting on the cliffs (May-August). Then there is the new lava field, which covered a large part of the old village in the 1973 eruption. The volcano still holds many lukewarm and even some burning hot lava spots! Optional summertime activity on the island is a short boat ride to see more of its wonders from the sea. Back on the mainland a visit to the picturesque waterfall Seljalandsfoss is included where an easy path actually goes behind the cascading water. This is a wonderful summer-time day tour which departs in the early hours from Reykjavík.
