The other day a family of four bid farewell to Iceland after a successful tour planned and executed by Iceland Discovery. They were head over heels after the tour and this is why:
The family spent four nights in the country-side and on two evenings got to see the magic of the swirling Aurora Borealis. We admit, luck was un our side! Here is where the road took them in the hands of our guide: After a day in Reykjavík, where they enjoyed an amazing Volcano and glacier helicopter tour, we took the course out to the Snæfellsnes peninsula where we checked into Hotel Búdir. The afternoon was spent around the tiny villages Arnarastapi and Hellnar with some delightful short hikes. After a superb dinner at hotel Búðir, we waited but not until long, we got this amazing Northern Lights dance in the skies.
The following day started with lots of smiles in the car when we went on to explore the rest of the peninsula. All along this great scenic coastal road you have an amazing view towards the black lava rocks on the coastline while the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier is the perfect backdrop. That night was cloudy so we did not see any Lights but the memory from last night was very much alive.
The following day we geared up, ready for more adventures and now in the Borgarfjordur valley. After a nice walk to the Eldborg crater we headed to Krauma nature baths for some great relaxations. Before checking in to our nice hotel Húsafell we had to check one more box, exploring one of the biggest lava tube caves in Iceland.
On day four we took a snowmobile tour on to the huge ice mass of the glacier Langjökull. A part of the tour was going to the Ice tunnel, a man-made ice cave that lets you wonder deep into the ancient glacier. As dusk approached everyone was excited because the night before had also been bit cloudy, yet showning some Lights behind the scattered clouds. The start was very promising, we were looking at the most brilliant starry night from the dining room and again that night we were blessed with the most vivid and vibrant play of the Northern Lights. Just an mazing tour!
